Intralesional Steroid injection

What is Intralesional Injection ?

This is a procedure involving the injection of a steroid solution directly into the skin lesion or immediately below the skin, with the aim of improving its appearance and/or reducing symptoms such as itch or pain.

Intralesional injections are been used in ?

Intralesional steroid injections are standard treatment for many skin diseases such as 

  • Keloids

  • Alopecia areata

  • Circumscribed plaques of dermatitis. 

What does the procedure involve ?

The area to be treated is numbed with a local anaesthetic, this may not be normally necessary. Depending on the size of the area to be treated, several injections may be needed at the same time. After the injection, a small dressing is placed over the affected area of skin which can be removed after a few hours. Depending on the skin condition being treated further treatment sessions may be offered, at least several weeks apart.

What are the possible side effects ?

The treatment in general is very safe. Some side effects are

  • Pain

  • Bleeding

  • Infection    

 

However in rare instances it can cause

  • Allergic reaction

  • Local Hypopigmentation

  • Skin Atrophy
